Remedy Reflections

On 9/7/2022, we mark Remedy Internal Medicine’s one-year anniversary.  At the time of our opening, I had no idea what this year would bring and I could not be more pleased by the evolution of our clinic.  I feel grateful for the leap each of you decided to take to join us.  I understand that this clinic is different than the norm and we love all of you early adopters.  A few thoughts as we look back on the year and move forward to our many more years to come.

In medical school, each student is taught the “right way” to conduct a history and physical exam on a new patient.  This would easily take an hour as we fumbled along, trying to get all the important pieces of the exam.  Later as residents and even seasoned staff physicians, we would cut the history and physical down as much as possible to make sure we could tackle all our hospital admissions or we would interrupt our patients during their explanations to avoid delaying other clinic patients. With Remedy Internal Medicine, we feel lucky to have extra time to listen to your stories and understand your health journeys in a way that gives us a better understanding of you as a person and therapies you have already tried to treat the issue at hand.  I have long believed that good doctoring cannot be rushed and it is great to have a clinic structure that supports that focus.

The direct primary care model does put a lot on our shoulders as physicians and nurses.  We like to be involved in every aspect of your care.  That accountability can feel overwhelming, but it also gives us an incredible sense of ownership over your care.  When we are invested in you, we think of you and want you to do well.  We rejoice in your treatment successes and struggle with the difficult diagnoses.  What a privilege to get to know you and walk that journey with you.

Perhaps what I underestimated was the value of accessibility.  I love that we can treat patients early in the course of their illness and potentially stave off more severe complications.  Also, I love the accessibility we provide to not only patients but to specialists, care facilities, and family members.  Knowing those around you allows us to tap into their understanding of the best way to care for you.

We are so grateful for the investment of Remedy’s patients in our success.  So many of you have asked after the business, provided testimonials or website edits, shared your stories with friends, and recommended us to others.  Thank you for being part of our clinic.  We hope you love it as much as we do!
